Summary

George Achilles SMITH was born on 4th May, 1882 in Muswellbrook, New South Wales. 

His parents were James & Annie Townshend SMITH. He married Leila May MURPHY in Sydney in 1915. Lieutenant George Achilles SMITH, was a 33 year old Bank Accountant from Burringbar, New South Wales. 

He enlisted on 10 May 1915, transferred to the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 6th Reinforcement, which embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A65 Clan MacEwen 28 June 1915. 

Lieutenant George Achilles SMITH was Killed in Action in Rafa, Palestine, on 9 January 1917.

An official cable has been received announcing the death in action in Egypt, on the 9th inst., of Captain G. A. Smith. Deceased was a member of the Camel Corps. He was a native of Narrabri, and was a Sydney Grammar School boy. For some time he occupied a position in the Murwillumbah branch of the Commercial Bank. Later he went to Wingham, from which place he enlisted, and went to the front in June, 1915. His father is Inspector of police at Narrabri, and his mother resides at Bossley Park. Deceased's wife is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Murphy, of Burringbar, Tweed River." - from the Sydney Daily Telegraph 20 Jan 1917
