Corporal Edward James Bryans
Early Life: Edward James Bryans was born on June 3, 1897, to parents James Durham and Jessica Durham. During his military service, his mother resided at Wharf Street, Murwillumbah.
Military Service: Edward embarked on his military journey when he enlisted in Brisbane on October 21, 1914. He served as a Corporal in C Company of the 15th Battalion in the Australian Army during World War I. His service took him to significant campaigns in Gallipoli and France.
Combat and Injuries:
- May 8, 1915: Wounded with a gunshot wound to the forearm and treated at the 1st General Hospital.
- October 1915: Contracted dysentery twice.
- February 1, 1917: Wounded in action in France, suffering burns to his shoulder and knee, and treated at Noll State Hospital.
- April 14, 1917: Wounded in action again but remained on duty.
Honors and Awards: Corporal Bryans' valor was recognized in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch on November 13, 1916, for "distinguished and gallant services and devotion to duty in the field." He received:
- Certificate 3300 for mention in despatches
- Anzac Commemorative Medallion
- 1914/1915 Star (number 5157)
- British War Medal (number 2211)
- Victory Medal
Discharge and Memorial: Edward was discharged from military service on January 24, 1919. His contributions are commemorated on the Nanango War Memorial.
Later Life: Edward James Bryans passed away on September 18, 1970.
